존 발리콘

John Barleycorn.

먼 옛날부터 영국인들이 죽이고 싶도록 증오하는 인물. 죽여도 죽여도 또 살아나고 또 살아나는 인물. 그래서 가장 잔인무도한 방법으로 죽이고 그 시체마저도 갈아마셔 버린다.

John은 흔한 이름이고, Barleycorn은 보리(barley)의 낟알(corn)을 뜻한다. 존 발리콘은 사실 보리의 낟알을 의인화한 존재다. 영국에서 보리는 예로부터 식량으로도, 맥주나 위스키의 원료로도 중요했던 곡물이었다.

영국의 민요인 'John Barleycorn'이 원류. 농부가 보리를 추수하는 과정을 존 발리콘을 죽이는 과정으로 묘사하고 있다. 이 노래는 여러 아티스트들이 불렀지만 가장 유명한 것은 아마도 영국 밴드 트래픽이 부른 버전일 것이다. 앨범 제목은 <John Barleycorn Must Die>

트래픽의 리더였던 스티브 윈우드가 혼자 기타 치면서 부른 버전. 1970년의 트래픽 때 노래와 비교하면 40년의 세월이 흘렀다. 훌쩍 나이든 스티브 윈우드의 모습 때문인지 노래가 더더욱 구슬프다. 이 노래를 가장 유명한 '존 발리콘'으로 만든 그의 포크 기타 플레이를 제대로 볼 수 있다.
